After meeting the mysterious girl Mae (Madeleine Arthur) at the hospital where she works, psychiatrist Suzanne Mathis (Emily Deschanel) brings her home as the girl awaits her foster care placement. With three daughters at home, Mae should have no trouble settling in, or so Mathis believes. Although the family knows very little about Mae’s past, it’s clear that she’s been through significant trauma.

Not long after her arrival, the Mathis family’s home life is thrown into chaos by a series of chilling incidents seemingly brought on by Mae’s presence. As they try to unravel her identity and past, they learn that their houseguest is a runaway from a satan-worshiping cult — and now they’re the target of this sinister group.

Inspired by a true story, the series also stars Sam Jaeger, Alisha Newton, Xaria Dotson, Gerardo Celasco, Naomi Tan, Jason Sakaki, Marci T. House, Samantha Ferris, Bradley Stryker, Evan Ellison, Djouliet Amara, Ty Wood, Eva Bourne, Tahmoh Penikett and Keenan Tracey.

For Polatin, who also serves as the series’ showrunner, adapting her book for the screen allowed for a deeper exploration of her characters. “In the series, we get to lean into Suzanne and her backstory. Why does Suzanne take Mae home? Why is Suzanne so drawn to her? Why does she go so far to help her?” she tells Tudum. “As a kid, I was so terrified of scary movies. I shied away from horror. Now, I really enjoy it as a place to look at our own psychology and our own fears.”

Prepare to confront your nightmares because Devil in Ohio premieres Sept. 2.
