You may recognize Dan Levy as David Rose, the comically spoiled eldest son of Schitt’s Creek’s Rose family. But there’s a lot more to Levy than fans of the hit CBC sitcom may know. “A lot of people think I’m a comic. And I’m not,” Levy told Netflix. “I’ve always been a slightly more emo person than people realize. So I’ve had to reconcile this outward persona, the David Rose persona that everyone seems to think is me.”

With his new film Good Grief, Levy is letting his somber side shine. The creator and star of Schitt’s Creek is once again wearing quite a few hats: Levy wrote, directed, produced, and stars in Good Grief, a new film that follows a bereaved widower on a weekend of self-discovery in the City of Love.
Levy sparked onto the idea for the film after his grandmother passed away: “The question became: What does it all mean and is there a correct way to grieve someone?” he said.
You can check out the trailer for Good Grief above, and read on for more information about this deeply personal story. “I needed to do this,” Levy says. “I needed to crack the seal on a screenplay, and this felt so personal to me.”

Marc (Dan Levy) was content living in the shadow of his larger-than-life husband, Oliver (Luke Evans). But when Oliver unexpectedly dies, Marc’s world shatters, sending him and his two best friends, Sophie (Ruth Negga) and Thomas (Himesh Patel), on a soul-searching trip to Paris that reveals some hard truths they each needed to face.
“Good Grief is a cautionary tale about friendship and loss and all the mess that comes with it when the truth is something you’ve evaded for most of your life,” Levy said. “It’s funny, it’s bittersweet, it’s a project that’s helped me work through my own grief. And I hope it does the same for other people as well.”

Levy takes on the role of Marc, a widower coping with the death of his husband.
“I wanted to tell a story of someone who was very different from myself,” Levy told Netflix. “His reactions are very different from my own, and even his calmness is very different from my energy. It was really exciting to write, and it was really challenging to play against what I had previously become known for, which was David Rose on Schitt’s Creek, who in that situation with Oliver would be a nightmare. An absolute nightmare.”

Marc’s close friend Sophie is played by Oscar nominee Ruth Negga; she’s recovering from the end of her own relationship, so she’s happy to accompany Marc on his journey of self-discovery.
“The film is about three friends in their mid-30s who have come to a point in their life where they’re deciding how to move forward, what they need to leave behind, and what avenues they wish to take in their lives now that they are considered adults,” Negga told Netflix. “There are many layers to this story. It’s actually a quite serious interrogation of friendship and loyalty and what we tolerate within our friendships and how our friendships can inform our other relationships.”

Marc and Thomas (Patel) dated way back when, but are now inseparable platonic friends.
“What excited me about the script when I first read it was its originality,” Patel told Netflix. “It brought to mind some of Nora Ephron’s and Richard Curtis’ movies, but it was also wholly original, modern, and really refreshing to see a film that centered on grief. For Dan to have written such a wonderful story and told it with such intelligence and vulnerability, I think it is really beautiful and honest.”

Luke Evans plays Oliver, Marc’s beloved husband and an author, who dies in a tragic accident. Oliver’s novels were a sensation, thanks in part to Marc’s art, spawning a successful film franchise.
Along with the other three main members of the cast, Evans made some time before filming to build real connections. “Because we were shooting in London, I booked us into Soho Farmhouse and took us to the countryside in those early days to build some chemistry that didn’t even really need to be built,” Levy said. “It was already there. We had the loveliest time, and we rehearsed for two weeks, and there was just such love and warmth there. And it really made the editing process easy because you see it, you feel that chemistry, you feel their love for each other.”

Imrie plays Oliver’s agent Imelda, who has some surprising financial news for Marc in the wake of his husband’s death.
Imrie found Levy’s passion for every element of his production refreshing. “I don’t think I’ve ever played a part where the director has had such a clear vision about the costumes,” Imrie told Netflix. “I first met Dan in my costume fitting, and he knows exactly what he wants. They were talking about this fantastic Céline coat and I certainly feel like I’ve now been educated. The looks that he goes for, you can’t liken to anything else.”

Corrin makes an unnamed cameo as a performance artist at a party Marc attends.
“I don’t think there are many films out there that really depict the realities of grief in a way that has lightness and heart, as well as the darker moments,” Corrin told Netflix.

Rise

The third act of Good Grief sees Marc finally get his act together and launch a cathartic art show of his work. There are portraits of his friends Sophie and Thomas, and of Oliver. All of the portraits in the film are the work of Levy’s fellow Toronto native Kris Knight.
“I’ve always been a fan of Kris,” Levy told Netflix. “I owned three of his paintings long before I asked him to do the movie. We followed each other on Instagram, and when the movie got a green light, I messaged him and said, ‘Can we have a conversation?’ ”
As it turned out, Knight (inspired by artist Francesco Clemente’s work on 1998’s Great Expectations) had been aching to work on a film. He contributed art for the final scene, and helped Levy prepare for the sequence where he sketches Oliver. “The movie ends with his paintings,” Levy said. “If they aren’t magnificent, then it’s a very lackluster way to end the film. His work did wonders.”
Good Grief is now streaming on Netflix. But don’t worry, it’s not all doom and gloom. Everything’s right there in the title: grief can be good.
“There’s such joy in this movie, it has much more to do with life than death which is why the movie starts with a death but doesn’t end with one,” Levy said. “It acts as a catalyst for someone to question who they are and how they got to where they were. And it also acts as a springboard for us to tell a really lovely story about friendship front and center. That is the romance in this film.” You’ll be able to share in that romance next year.
