Anyone who’s ever felt compelled to keep playing a favorite game way past their bedtime knows the phrase “just one more turn.” Used by those who can’t tear themselves away from their gaming session, the phrase originated more than three decades ago, when passionate players of Sid Meier’s Civilization found themselves pointing and clicking into the wee hours.

A quarter of a century, five sequels, and countless expansions and spin-offs later, the absorbing, turn-based strategy series continues to see dedicated fans constructing empires –– and conquering adversaries –– until the sun comes up. Netflix subscribers can now experience the latest, most ambitious entry in the series, Sid Meier’s Civilization VI: Platinum Edition, ad-free and with no in-app purchases.

As with most titles in Netflix’s growing game library, Sid Meier’s Civilization VI: Platinum Edition arrives with a combination of exclusive perks and goodies you won’t find in its other versions. Whether you’re looking to lay the foundation of your very first settlement, or you’re a seasoned strategist with plans to expand your empire across the world, read on for everything you need to know about Civilization VI

What kind of game is Sid Meier’s Civilization VI: Platinum Edition?

Civilization VI is a turn-based, 4X strategy game. The term “4X” refers to the quartet of core gameplay elements –– explore, expand, exploit, exterminate –– that you’ll leverage to succeed in the game. For the uninitiated, this simply means you’ll utilize a number of interconnected gameplay systems, mechanics, and features to build and nurture a thriving nation from the ground up.

Players assume the role of a real-life leader while aligning with, and competing against, other renowned historical figures. Depending on whose big shoes you decide to fill and how you expand your civilization, you can cultivate a healthy society through advanced diplomacy, fostering culture and the arts, or gaining world dominance through commerce. You can also choose to advance through brute conquest, but be warned: Rival empires are prepared to meet your aggression in kind.

What is Civilization VI: Platinum Edition’s story?

Given its strong focus on history and its prominent leaders, you might expect Civilization VI to be a story-driven experience. But your path from settling a modest city to becoming a global superpower is packed with twists, turns, and tales big and small. Most of the narrative isn’t predetermined; it’s shaped by your thoughtful strategy, decisions, and choices.

Your empire-expanding adventure begins with selecting a starting point from a variety of available countries and continents. You’ll also play the role of a world leader ripped right from the history books. More than 70 famous figures possess unique strengths and weaknesses that can potentially impact your personal journey.

Your path to victory, whether through diplomacy, domination, science, religion, or culture, is helped or hindered by your interactions with other legendary leaders. The game provides the general rules and parameters, as well as the tools to build and evolve your empire, and the narrative is largely generated by your actions. Whether you choose to lead with a stovepipe hat on your head or dressed in a bloody toga, you can bet Civilization VI’s tales are far more entertaining than anything you’ll find in a textbook.

What’s different about the Netflix Civilization VI: Platinum Edition?

Originally released in 2016, Civilization VI has allowed fans to rule the world from pretty much every available gaming platform. But this newest, Netflix-exclusive version, the Platinum Edition, is positioned to be the best yet, offering a unique combination of perks and features specific to the platform.

For starters, Civilization VI is included as part of your Netflix subscription. With a few simple inputs, subscribers can play for free on the very same device on which they enjoy their favorite series and movies. Unlike other mobile versions of the game, this iteration removes all ads and in-app purchases –– so there’s no limit to how many turns you can take.

Best of all, the game includes its six previously released content updates, as well as its two expansions, Rise and Fall and Gathering Storm
