It’s been more than half a decade since Alejandro G. Iñárritu won his second best director Oscar in a row for The Revenant. In the time since, the Mexican filmmaker has been on a hiatus, but now he’s returning to the screen with his new film Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths.
Bardo is a semi-autobiographical tale of a renowned Mexican journalist (Daniel Giménez Cacho) who returns to his home to grapple with his identity and memories. Like Iñárritu’s The Revenant and Birdman, it’s a journey through the world — and through the mind of one man.

Alongside Cacho, the film stars Griselda Siciliani, Ximena Lamadrid and Jay O. Sanders. Iñárritu directed the film and co-wrote the script with Nicolás Giacobone.
Bardo premiered at the Venice International Film Festival in September. It hits select theaters in the United States on Nov. 4 and Netflix on Dec. 16. Check out the new trailer for a first look at the film.
