The short film Anuja is coming to Netflix. The poignant story follows nine-year-old Anuja, played by Sajda Pathan, who works alongside her sister Palak (Ananya Shanbhag) at a garment factory in Delhi, India. When the bright Anuja is faced with a life-changing choice, the future of her family rests on her shoulders.
Anuja was shortlisted for Best Live Action Short Film at the 97th Academy Awards. Director Adam J. Graves and producer Suchitra Mattai also took home the top prize of Best Live Action Short when Anuja premiered last August at the HollyShorts Film Festival. To bring the rousing tale of two sisters to the screen, the filmmakers worked with nonprofits Salaam Baalak Trust, which provides support for working children in India, and Shine Global, plus NGOs like the Kailash Satyarthi Children’s Foundation and Save the Children.
“Anuja is a heartfelt tribute to the resilience and untold stories of working children, highlighting their joy and hope amidst challenges. The film captures the innocence and magic of childhood,” said Graves. “I’m grateful to our producers and to Netflix for giving this important story a global platform, connecting audiences worldwide to the strength of these remarkable children.”
The filmmaker is joined by producers Mindy Kaling (Never Have I Ever) and Guneet Monga Kapoor (Academy Award-winning documentary short film The Elephant Whisperers) as well as executive producer Priyanka Chopra Jonas in their eager anticipation to bring the live-action short to audiences worldwide. “Anuja is a story that means so much to me—it’s powerful, hopeful, and full of life, just like the incredible young girls it represents,” said Kaling. “The film brings attention to crucial issues while celebrating resilience, humor, and hope. I’m delighted that, with Netflix joining the team, the conversation will expand as it reaches audiences far and wide.”
