Six seasons, two spin-offs and countless French tucks later, Queer Eye has given out its fair share of advice in its nearly four years of airing. Hip Tips, the final segment of each episode, provides quick advice to viewers who may be wondering things like Just how can I get my hair to look as shiny as Jonathan’s? or Can Karamo be my therapist? We’ve compiled all of this guidance into a quick reference guide divided into handy sections, including Food and Wine, Fashion, Culture, Design and Grooming. So the next time you wonder just how to get rid of that weird smell in your jeans, we — and the Queer Eye Fab 5, of course — have got you covered.
Even though Antoni Porowski does a little more than just food and wine (he also provides many of Queer Eye’s thirst traps), he dishes out lot of helpful advice for stocking bar carts, storing food and party planning in his repertoire of hip tips.
Spice Up Your Margarita (S1, E1)

Porowski tells us not to “get stuck in a rut with your margarita” in this section and instructs us to “add some jalapeños or cilantro.” But hold the cilantro for resident grooming expert Jonathan Van Ness, who apparently “hates” it (but loves margs).
Closing with Coffee (S2, E8)

Because entertaining is “all about clever innuendo and planning,” Porowski says he likes to serve a proper coffee and tea service at the end of dinner parties. “It tells my guests, ‘I’m sophisticated and thoughtful,’” he says, “But it also says, ‘Perhaps it’s time to go.’”
Tomatoes - A PSA (S3, E2)

Via an extended joke about how to pronounce the word tomato (fashion expert Tan France leans toward tom-a-to, while Porowski insists on tom-ah-to), Porowski instructs us to keep the vegetable out of the fridge, instead storing it in a cool, dry spot away from sunlight.
Setting the Bar (S4, E5)

To set up a bar, Porowski insists we need only gin, vodka, whiskey and tequila — and enough mixers for mocktails!
Keep It Simple, Salty (S4, E8)

Porowski uses two kinds of salt when cooking: kosher salt — “because it clings really nicely to food and seasons your pasta water” — and a fancier flakey salt to give a finished dish a “lovely textural element.” He finishes by telling us to “keep it simple,” which is ironic given this is one more kind of salt than many people normally use every day.
Compost for the Win (S5, E5)

Because organic waste creates methane gas, Porowski encourages using composting to fertilize a garden. “Basic rule of thumb: If it grew from the ground, it’s compostable,” he says. “Eggshells are okay, but most animal products, like meat, are not.” Instead, perhaps give your leftover meat to dogs like Walter (pictured).
Martini, Dirty Martini (S5, E7)

Porowski gives us what he calls the “511” on dirty martinis: five parts chilled vodka or gin, one part vermouth and one part olive juice, shaken or stirred (sorry, Mr. Bond), poured into a chilled martini glass and topped with blue cheese olives.
Old Fashioned but Never Out of Style (S6, E5)

Here, Porowski teaches us how to make another classic drink: the old fashioned. “Start out with an old fashioned glass, one sugar cube, a couple of drops of bitters, three to four splashes of water,” he says. “Old fashioneds are typically made with rye or bourbon, but today, we’re going primo with some whiskey. A few ice cubes — larger ice cubes will prevent your cocktail from watering down. And finally, zest of fresh orange.” Cheers!
How Do You Use Chopsticks? (Queer Eye: We’re in Japan!: S1, E2)

Special guest star and model Kiko Mizuhara teaches culture expert Karamo Brown how to use chopsticks in this special segment. She advises holding the first chopstick like a pencil and putting the second between your thumb and index finger. Support with your ring finger, and move the top chopstick, not the bottom.
As the fashion expert, France gives out the majority of the series’ hip tips, instructing how to dress for your body type, fit your own clothing and, of course, French tuck.
Jelly Belly (S1, E7)

While demonstrating on Porowski, France says if you’re insecure about your stomach, you can layer your clothing to distract from your weak spot. Porowski calls France “mean,” though France chides that “[he’s] the one who ate the extra donut.” We support you, Antoni.
French Tuck (S2, E2)

France starts this segment off with the understatement of the century, proclaiming that “you’ll often find me sporting a French tuck.” To do a French tuck, just tuck the front of a shirt into pants. It may seem like a simple move, but France promises “it’s gonna balance your proportions and help you look taller and leaner.” And with those words, he started what appears to be the second French Revolution.
Slim Is In (S2, E3)

France recommends a slim-fit jean here, as he says the tapered leg will make anyone look longer and leaner.
Nonbinary Buys (S2, E5)

France and Van Ness combine forces in this segment to encourage viewers to head into the women’s department for certain pieces, just like Jonathan does.
Tie Me Up (S4, E2)

France gives step-by-step instructions on how to tie a simple knot in a necktie: First, start off with “the thin end on your right side, the thicker end on your left side,” he instructs. Then make the left side longer, and cross the thinner end about three to four inches down. “With the thicker end, you’re gonna spin it around and then feed it over,” he says. “Tuck it through the loop and pull. Then, simply pull the thinner end up, bring your collar down for one final adjustment and that is how you tie a simple knot.” Might be easier to just watch the video, so check out the episode at 46:24 for the visual.
Hot on Your Heels (S4, E6)

Van Ness makes a fashion cameo as he gives advice about walking in heels. “You gotta wear it all over the house,” he says. “Take a seat in it. Maybe walk around in it. Build your confidence and serve that walk instead of serving someone who just is not comfortable in heels.” Confidence is all you need to rock those killer over-the-knee boots. What’s that saying? The higher the heel, the closer to Jon.
Freeze the Funk (S5, E4)

To get rid of smelly jeans without washing and fading them, France recommends an unorthodox method: Stick them in the freezer for up to six hours, which gets rid of odor and bacteria. He, of course, demonstrates on Porowski, who takes off his pants while groaning, “Everyone likes to humiliate Antoni.”
No Time to Waist (S6, E3)

To avoid a dressing room at the store, France reiterates a life hack made famous on TikTok: If the waist on jeans or skirts wraps around your neck to where the edges just touch, it should fit perfectly around your body.
One Running Stitch at a Time (S6, E8)

France introduces us to the running stitch, which can help you alter clothes at home. Though a sewing machine “will set you back around $100,” he says, “it will save you hundreds, if not thousands, in alterations.”
Though he’s deemed the “culture” expert, Brown typically deals with issues surrounding mental health and self-confidence. His hip tips are useful in navigating relationships, anxiety and bad habits.
Hashtag, You’re It! (S1, E2)

Brown recommends hashtags to brand yourself on social media but with the caveat to be, in his words, “strategic about [which ones] you use. Keep them short, understandable, and, most importantly, about you.”
Dragon Breath (S1, E5)

Van Ness makes a guest appearance to teach a breathing technique for a stressful day. After making a “phone” with your hand and blocking off your left nostril, inhale through the right, hold it and switch sides of the “phone,” exhaling through the left. Do the same for the other one, repeat the process for about a minute and “watch your worries melt away for a gorgeous day.”
Walking with Confidence (S1, E6)

To strut your stuff, Brown instructs viewers to “start with a smile, then stand straight, shoulders back and don’t forget eye contact.”
Tweets, Not Tokes (S2, E6)

Whenever you feel the urge to smoke, Brown recommends tweeting. It worked for his dad, he reveals, which begs the question: Mr. Brown, would you please make your secret Twitter account public? Pretty please?
The Buddy System (S3, E5)

If social anxiety is stopping you from meeting new people or trying new things, Brown says to try bringing a buddy along who can support you along the way, like Van Ness. We’d bring him if we could!
Friends: Faux Vs. For Real (S4, E1)

After an episode all about high school, Brown digs into those friendship dynamics that are so high school. He advises to “do an inventory on the people in your life, because some of your Day One friends have been hating on you since Day Two.” He adds, “Invest your time in people who love and support you. Remember, it’s about quality, not quantity.”
Slay the Day (S5, E3)

To start the day off right, Brown recommends turning on your favorite song and dancing like nobody’s watching — which, in Brown’s case, means twerking in front of design expert Bobby Berk.
Relate to Communicate (S5, E8)

Brown brings on his sons Jason and Chris for this hip tip about finding common ground to spark conversation. For them, that means cooking, politics and bomber jackets.
Full Self-Esteem Ahead! (S6, E9)

In order to build self-esteem, Brown advises looking into the mirror every day and saying things you like about yourself out loud. And if you can’t do that, get your own personal Bobby Berk to come gas you up.
Berk arguably does the most out of any Queer Eye expert, but he still finds time to hand out advice on easy home and garden renovations (at least, easier renovations than what he manages to magically pull off in three days).
Off the Wall (S2, E7)

An easy way to “zhuzh” up your apartment, even if you’re renting, Berk says, is self-adhesive wallpaper. If you take it off before you leave, you won’t lose your deposit.
Poppin’ Fresh Kitchen (S3, E6)

Berk advises using contrasting colors to make your kitchen really pop. With a light cabinet, do a dark countertop, and vice versa. “I personally like doing light on the top because it draws your eye upward, and makes your space feel larger, even if it’s not,” he says.
Tile the Same Style (S4, S7)

In the world of kitchen renovations, Berk observes that “one of the biggest nightmares you can run into” is finding out your wooden floors don’t run under the cabinets you’re trying to move. To fix that, find an entry door with the same matching floor, remove it, replace it under the cabinets and put tile in your entry.
Lilies’ Dirty Secret (S5, E9)

The anther, Berk says, is a lily’s “dirty little secret.” When these pollen producers fall out, they can stain counters, floors — even your nose! To combat this, take it out with a tissue right when you get home.
A Salty Trick (S6, E4)

Berk recommends epsom salts, which help plants absorb nutrition, to fertilize your garden quickly and cheaply. “To do it,” he says, “take a teaspoon of epsom salt — you can put it directly into the soil, or you can take another teaspoon — put it in a cup of water and lightly spray it on the leaves.”
Though he guest stars in plenty of other hip tips, Van Ness offers grooming advice of his own, recommending lip scrubs, lotions and shaves to keep yourself looking fresh and fabulous.
DIY Lip Scrub (S1, E3)

For this DIY lip scrub, mix together half a cup of coconut oil, two tablespoons of brown sugar, a touch of honey and any essential oil. “I chose grapefruit,” Van Ness says, “because everyone knows citrus has a touch more exfoliating power.”
Crusty Hands No More (S3, E3)

The key to softening up “dry, crusty hands” is as simple as getting your beauty rest, Van Ness says. To start, rinse and dry off your hands and slather in some moisturizer. Then, put some socks on your hands and go to bed to really let the moisture sink in (plus, you’ll get to make some neat sock puppet shadows before you fall asleep).
Conserve Your Splurge (S4, E4)

To conserve a skincare product, don’t rub it on your hands and then your face, Van Ness says. Instead, dot it onto your skin and then rub in. “That way you’re not wasting excess product on the palms of your hands,” he says, “and then you don’t feel guilty about your impulse buy on spending on your skincare, because honey, it’s gonna last forever.”
Know When to Make a Change (S5, E10)

Though he never advises impulsively cutting your hair off (we’re looking at you, TikTok), Van Ness does say to switch it up if you’ve been feeling a change for some time. Here, we get to see him shave off his iconic mustache on-camera.
A Good Trim Job (S6, E2)

If you just want a quick clean-up, Van Ness recommends just shaving the upper lip. “The first thing we do when we see somebody is we look at their mouth, and who doesn’t love to look at a gorgeous pair of lips?” he says. “Not covered up by a whole bunch of hair.” To demonstrate, he uses Berk, a fellow card-carrying beard-grower of the Fab 5.
Lotion Is the Notion (S6, E7)

That moisturizing staple on your counter? It might be a little out of season. For different times of the year, Van Ness says our skin needs different care: In the winter, a cream-based moisturizer will help hydration, while in the summer, your skin will absorb a gel moisturizer more easily.
Accountabilibuddies! (S3, E4)

Another facet of self-care is exercise, and Berk recommends relying on others for help here. “You don’t have to take your journey to self-care alone,” he says. “Working out in a community-based program helps you be held accountable and be around people with like-minded goals.” This hip tip also confirms that Berk is a certified Orange Theory stan.
A Pawsitively Perfect Introduction (S6, E1)

While introducing Season 6 pup Neon, Porowski and France recommend adopting, not shopping for a dog. Though the pets already come with “a gorgeous coat,” as France notes, the two dress Neon up in a series of tutus and wigs before getting to the real message: “All jokes aside, adopting dogs is a lot of fun and a lot of responsibility, but it can be life-changing,” says Porowski. Aww.
Make Your Memories Last Forever (S6, E6)

Brown advises hanging flowers from a special occasion (like a prom or wedding) in a cool, dry spot for about two weeks before spraying them with hairspray to preserve the petals. This is, of course, before he reminds himself that he’s single. Hint to all the eligible bachelors out there...
