For almost four decades, A Different World has held a special place in TV history. The groundbreaking sitcom, a spin-off of The Cosby Show that ran from 1987 to 1993, was set at a historically Black college (HBCU) and starred a majority-Black cast who portrayed a group of students navigating college life. “We represented all these different facets of young Black life that we had never seen before,” Cree Summer, who played Freddie Brooks, told TODAY last year

Now, nearly 38 years after its premiere, A Different World still has a multigenerational impact on viewers of all ages. The series — which is now streaming on Netflix in the US — portrays themes of self-discovery in young adulthood and highlights the importance of friendship, while also grappling with sociopolitical issues with awareness and care.

Whether A Different World holds a special place in your heart, or if you’re a viewer experiencing the joys of the show for the very first time, here’s everything you need to know about the series.

What happens in A Different World?

A Different World begins by following Denise (Lisa Bonet), the second eldest of The Cosby Show’s Huxtable family, as she heads off to attend the fictional HBCU Hillman College. Though Bonet departed after the first season, the series continued, focusing on the lives and experiences of a diverse ensemble of undergraduate students figuring out who they are within a complex and rapidly changing world.

From Season 2 onward, A Different World primarily follows Southern belle Whitley Gilbert (Jasmine Guy), math whiz Dwayne Cleophus Wayne aka “Dwayne Wayne” (Kadeem Hardison) and his best friend Ron Johnson (Darryl M. Bell), student activist Freddie Brooks (Summer), studious go-getter Kimberly Reese (Charnele Brown), responsible Jaleesa Vinson (Dawnn Lewis), math professor and ROTC instructor Colonel Bradford Taylor (Glynn Turman), and campus restaurant owner Vernon Gaines (Lou Myers). Lena Horne, Patti LaBelle, and Diahann Carroll were among the recurring characters, and the series’ guest stars include Jesse Jackson, Halle Berry, Gladys Knight, and Tupac Shakur.

Part of what makes the show so special, according to Brown, is that “There was something for everybody.” As the actor told NBC in a 2017 interview, “Whatever age group you were in, whether you were retired and trying to make your contribution to these young people like Mr. Gaines was. Whether you were a former military person like Col. Taylor was. Whether you were somebody who thought it was over for you, but you were gonna take a chance on yourself and reboot yourself and try again like Jaleesa was. Or you were privileged and really had no concept of what the average person had to deal with, like Whitley was.”

Throughout the show’s six seasons, the students of Hillman participate in college activities, coursework, and clubs, all while navigating important and timely real-world issues, including apartheid, HIV/AIDS, domestic violence, consent, and police brutality. “We had great writers,” Hardison, who played Dwayne Wayne, said during a stop at Howard University on the A Different World HBCU Tour in 2024. “They put us in positions to have conversations about things I didn’t expect to see.”

Where is A Different World set?

A Different World is set at the fictional Hillman College in Virginia. When television producer and director Debbie Allen (Fame) took over as the show’s producer after Season 1, the Howard University alumna refocused the sitcom to portray a more authentic HBCU experience. (Some shots of campus buildings were represented by real-life buildings at Spelman College and Clark Atlanta University, both in Atlanta.) In her efforts to revamp the series, Allen also required her writers to spend time on HBCU campuses. “She was a marvel, a whirlwind that took and turned that upside down,” Turman, who played Col. Taylor, told NBC

Notably, the series is credited with contributing to an uptick in HBCU enrollment during its run. Data from the National Center for Education Statistics shows that admissions into HBCUs increased by 25 percent between 1976 and 1994, with the biggest bump occurring when A Different World aired.
