The Eighth Day

Amid an affair with her married colleague Takehiro, Kiwako learns an abortion has left her infertile, sending her down a path of grief and desperation.

On the run and with nowhere to turn, Kiwako cautiously accepts help from a stranger who directs her to an isolated commune for women in distress.

Three years on, living safely in the commune, Kiwako finds herself and Kaoru at risk when the Angel Home attracts unwanted outside attention.

With their freedom under threat, Kiwako escapes to an island community to meet Kumi's mother, hoping she and Kaoru can avoid the authorities' attention.

Kiwako resists the chance to get closer to Bunji, before a published photograph soon threatens to destroy the peaceful life she's built on the island.

Years later, Kaoru – now living under her birth name – returns to Shōdoshima with her friend to try and uncover a past she struggles to remember.
