Osaka, 1938. Fuku-chan takes a job as a telephone operator, and during her first call connection, her life becomes forever intertwined with Mampei's.

After her mother collapses with stomach pain, Fuku-chan grows distracted at work and accidentally connects Mampei's call to the wrong guest.

Fuku-chan and Katsuko confront their mother over her suspicious stomachaches. Meanwhile, Mampei, struggling with sales, meets the enigmatic Kajitani.

While arranging a surprise for Saki's wedding, Fuku-chan meets Mampei again, who shares his newest invention — a magic lantern — with her.

Three years later, Fuku-chan is working at a Chamber of Commerce dinner party when a minor mishap brings her face-to-face with a figure from the past.

Heading home after visiting an ailing Saki, Fuku-chan runs into Mampei, who asks her out. On their date, they realize their first meeting was fated.

Mampei stuns Fuku-chan — and himself — when he confesses his feelings. Meanwhile, Suzu continues to push her youngest child to meet with a matchmaker.

Giddy from her date with Mampei, Fuku-chan returns home and fights with Suzu, who opposes the relationship because he runs his own company.

Fuku-chan and Suzu care for Saki after she collapses and is diagnosed with tuberculosis. Mampei finds a specialist hospital, but Suzu rebuffs him.

Saki starts to heal, but Fuku-chan still hasn't seen Mampei in weeks. As spring arrives, Tadahiko paints cherry blossoms for his bedridden sister-in-law.
