1934: José, a young Asturian miner, is forced to embark on a long journey when tragedy suddenly befalls him.

1934: On a ship traveling to Argentina, José assumes the identity of his dead brother Andrés and makes friendships that will change his future.

1934: Andrés and his fellow travelers arrive in Buenos Aires. Andrés and Juliusz move into a tenement. Gemma moves in with her despotic aunt.

1936: Andrés and Juliusz join an anarchist group unpopular with the law. Vidal, a passionate young anarchist, reminds Andrés of his dead brother.

1939: The Spanish Civil War is drawing to a close and the situation is looking grim for the Republicans.

1941: Juliusz and Gemma grow closer. Andrés meets Sophie, a Jewish Frenchwoman who impacts him deeply, but the past won't let him forget old promises.

1945: Andrés's past comes back to life in the form of someone very close to him who he thought was dead, changing his and his family's lives.

1947: A musician with a checkered past appears in Andrés and Sophie's life, and they suspect he may be on the run from post-Nazi Germany.

1951: Sophie, Andrés's wife, is tired of giving piano lessons. She starts playing piano for a tango orchestra in a cabaret, but Andrés is against it.

1952: Argentina is hit hard by Eva Perón's death, but Andrés suffers his own tragedy. 2003: Cecilia goes to Madrid to escape the economic crisis.
