Steven Soderbergh
Steven SoderberghBorn January 14, 1963, in Atlanta, Ga., Steven Soderbergh moved to Baton Rouge, La., where his father worked at Louisiana State University. While in high school, Soderbergh enrolled in LSU's film animation class and made several shorts.

Moving to Hollywood after high school to work as an editor, he spent his free time directing short films. He expanded one of these shorts into his first feature, Sex, Lies, and Videotape (1989), which won the Golden Palm at the Cannes Film Festival and earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay.

Soderbergh has balanced his output between small personal projects, such as King of the Hill, Schizopolis and The Limey, with bigger-budget Hollywood productions such as Out of Sight, Solaris and Ocean's Eleven. In 2000, he received two nominations for Best Director for Erin Brockovich and Traffic. Ultimately, Traffic won him the Oscar.
