A native of the Big Apple but raised in Los Angeles, Maggie Gyllenhaal -- the older sister of Tinseltown heartthrob Jake -- was born Nov. 16, 1977. She splashed onto the silver screen opposite Jeremy Irons in 1992's Waterland, directed by her father, Stephen.After appearing in several more films helmed by her dad and honing her skills on London and New York City stages, Gyllenhaal's movie career picked up steam with her memorable performance as a devil worshipper in Cecil B. DeMented (2000).
She next co-starred with brother Jake in Donnie Darko (2001), but her big breakthrough came in 2002 with her portrayal of a mentally unhinged woman in Secretary, for which the actress received a Golden Globe nomination. Her subsequent film credits include Adaptation (2002), Criminal (2004) and Sherrybaby (2006), in which she received another Golden Globe nod.
