"Fresh Prince" Will Smith is a bona fide Hollywood rarity: a Grammy Award-winning rap star who has successfully crossed over into superstar leading man status in movies. Born Sept. 28, 1968, in Philadelphia, Pa., Smith was the second of four kids.Smith, who earned the moniker "Prince" because of his innate charm, teamed up with DJ Jazzy Jeff, and the duo quickly found fame (and a record contract) as rappers. In 1989, Smith translated his musical success into a long-running TV sitcom, "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air."
From there, it was a short step to feature films, several of which became Hollywood blockbusters, including Independence Day (1996) and Men in Black (1997). He gained critical praise with Oscar nods for playing Muhammad Ali in Ali (2001) and a down-on-his-luck but determined father in The Pursuit of Happyness (2006).
