Born in New York on May 12, 1959, Irving "Ving" Rhames grew up in Harlem, attending the New York High School of Performing Arts and the Julliard School of Drama.Rhames began his career on the stage, first appearing on Broadway with Matt Dillon in 1984's "The Winter Boys." For the next decade, he continued to act on the stage, in movies and on television. In 1994, Rhames received critical acclaim and greater recognition with his portrayal of the sadistic drug dealer Marsellus Wallace in Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction.
Although he often plays villains, Rhames is known for his big heart. In 1998 he received a Golden Globe for his portrayal of the title character in the cable film Don King: Only in America, but he immediately gave the award to fellow nominee Jack Lemmon, stating that Lemmon deserved it. Other notable films include Mission Impossible, Rosewood, Con Air and Out of Sight.
