Born in Sydney, Australia, on Nov. 1, 1972, Toni Collette left school at age 16 to enroll at the National Institute of Dramatic Arts. After completing only 18 months of a three-year program, she was cast in her first film, The Efficiency Expert (1992), opposite Anthony Hopkins.Fame came almost immediately for Collette with Muriel's Wedding (1994), followed by the independent hits Emma (1996) and Clockwatchers (1997). She found mainstream success with The Sixth Sense (1999), for which she received a Best Supporting Actress nomination.
Her string of memorable film roles continued with Shaft (2000), Changing Lanes (2002), About a Boy (2002), The Hours (2002) and In Her Shoes (2005), opposite Cameron Diaz. Collette's roots in independent productions remain strong with films such as Japanese Story (2003) and The Last Shot (2004). Her work in TV's Tsunami: The Aftermath garnered her an Emmy nod and her lead role in "United States of Tara" got her her first Emmy win.
