The rebellious loners Steve McQueen played on-screen in films such as Bullitt (1968) and Papillon (1973) were not all that different from the real-life McQueen, who dropped out of high school and roamed the country before enlisting in the Marines.Born March 24, 1930, in Beech Grove, Ind., McQueen moved to New York in 1950. After training at the Actor's Studio, he made his Broadway debut in "A Hatful of Rain" and his film debut in Somebody Up There Likes Me -- both in 1956. Two years later, he would be cast in leading roles both in film (The Blob) and on TV (as the bounty hunter in "Wanted: Dead or Alive").
By the early '60s, McQueen was a bona fide star -- a status confirmed by his presence in John Sturges's smash The Magnificent Seven. A string of hits followed, including The Great Escape, The Sand Pebbles (which earned him an Oscar nod) and The Getaway. McQueen died Nov. 7, 1980.
