Winters first gained critical notice in A Double Life (1947). As Montgomery Clift's pregnant girlfriend in A Place in the Sun (1951), she earned her first Oscar nod for Best Supporting Actress. She went on to win the award twice, for The Diary of Anne Frank (1959) and A Patch of Blue (1965), and was nominated again for her role best known to later generations: Mrs. Rosen in The Poseidon Adventure (1972).
Winters' other films include Red River, The Night of the Hunter, Lolita, Next Stop, Greenwich Village and S.O.B. She also had a recurring role on television's "Roseanne." Winters died Jan. 14, 2006.
