Born into an acting family on March 1, 1954, in Duncan, Okla., Ron Howard has been in front of or behind the camera since his acting debut at 18 months in Frontier Woman (1956).In 1960, he was cast as the precocious Opie on "The Andy Griffith Show," a role he played for eight years. After director George Lucas tapped him for a part in American Graffiti (1973), Howard played a similar character on the TV series "Happy Days," which lasted from 1974 to 1980. He continued to take film roles, but by this time, his ambition was to direct.
Striking a deal with producer Roger Corman, Howard wrote, directed and starred in Grand Theft Auto (1977). He went on to direct a string of successful comedies, including Night Shift, Splash, Cocoon and Parenthood, as well as acclaimed works such as Apollo 13, Ransom, The Missing, A Beautiful Mind (for which he won a Best Director Oscar) and Frost/Nixon (for which he was Oscar nominated).
