Taking on various roles throughout the 1930s and '40s, he eventually found his niche as the quintessential American cowboy admired by audiences and critics alike in Westerns such as Virginia City (1940), Western Union (1941), Seven Men from Now (1956), The Tall T (1957), Shoot-Out at Medicine Bend (1957) and his final film, Sam Peckinpah's Ride the High Country (1962).
His fistfight with John Wayne in The Spoilers (1942) is often cited as one of the most memorable ever filmed. Scott died on March 2, 1987.
