Born in Philadelphia on Oct. 18, 1935, Peter Boyle had just come off a stretch as a monk with the order of the Christian Brothers when he moved to Chicago and joined the Second City comedy troupe. His distinctive look helped establish him as a busy character actor and landed him minor but memorable roles in Young Frankenstein (1974), While You Were Sleeping (1995) and The Santa Clause trilogy (1994, 2002 and 2006), as well as the made-for-television movies Tail Gunner Joe (1977) and From Here to Eternity (1979). He also earned an Emmy for a guest appearance on "The X Files" in 1996.
But Boyle found his most lasting success toward the end of his career, playing Ray Romano's father on the hit CBS sitcom "Everybody Loves Raymond," a role that earned him seven consecutive Emmy nominations and endeared him to millions of fans around the world. He died on Dec. 12, 2006, at the age of 71.
