Although he turned down the chance to play James Bond in Her Majesty's Secret Service, McGoohan entered the spy game with television's "Secret Agent," followed by the influential sci-fi series "The Prisoner" (1967-68), a British cult hit that he also co-created. Later in life, he delivered a memorable portrayal of the sadistic Longshanks, King Edward I, in Braveheart (1995) and lent his voice to an episode of "The Simpsons," among other projects.
McGoohan also earned a pair of Emmys for guest-starring roles on the long-running detective series "Columbo." He died on Jan. 13, 2009, at the age of 80.
