Patrick McGoohan
Born in Queens, N.Y., on March 19, 1928, Patrick McGoohan returned to Ireland with his immigrant family when he was just an infant, later moving to England. He honed his acting skills on the English stage, winning the London Drama Critics Award in 1959 for a starring role in Ibsen¿s "Brand."

Although he turned down the chance to play James Bond in Her Majesty's Secret Service, McGoohan entered the spy game with television's "Secret Agent," followed by the influential sci-fi series "The Prisoner" (1967-68), a British cult hit that he also co-created. Later in life, he delivered a memorable portrayal of the sadistic Longshanks, King Edward I, in Braveheart (1995) and lent his voice to an episode of "The Simpsons," among other projects.

McGoohan also earned a pair of Emmys for guest-starring roles on the long-running detective series "Columbo." He died on Jan. 13, 2009, at the age of 80.
