Tougher than any of the characters she's played, Patricia Neal has endured much tragedy (including the death of a child). Born Jan. 20, 1926, in Packard, Ky., Neal studied drama at Northwestern University before making her Broadway debut in 1946. The following year she won a Tony for her performance in "Another Part of the Forest."With her wide cheekbones and even wider grin, Neal was a natural for the big screen, and in 1949, portrayed an emotionally repressed heiress opposite Gary Cooper in The Fountainhead. In the following years, she would alternate between stage and screen, appearing in Breakfast at Tiffany's and earning a Best Actress Oscar for Hud.
In 1965, Neal suffered a series of strokes that left her partially paralyzed. Making a remarkable recovery, she returned to Oscar-nominated form in 1968's The Subject Was Roses. Recent work includes films such as Cookie's Fortune.
