After dropping out of the University of Texas at Austin just before graduation, Wilson teamed up with friend and director Wes Anderson to co-write the screenplay for Bottle Rocket (1996), in which Wilson co-starred with brother Luke.Owen soon moved to Hollywood and was cast in the Ben Stiller-directed The Cable Guy. His friendship with Stiller has resulted in the pair working together on such films as Permanent Midnight, Meet the Parents, Zoolander and Starsky & Hutch.
