Norman Jewison
Norman JewisonBorn in Toronto on July 21, 1926, director Norman Jewison returned from serving in World War II to tour parts of the segregated South, a sobering trip that would affect the themes of his work for years to come.

After getting his start directing the live musical variety show "Your Hit Parade" in 1958, Jewison moved on to lighthearted feature films. But his career took a turn when he was tapped to direct The Cincinnati Kid (1965) starring Steve McQueen, with whom he later made The Thomas Crown Affair (1968).

Jewison's success continued with The Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming (1966), In the Heat of the Night (1967), Fiddler on the Roof (1971), A Soldier's Story (1984) and Moonstruck (1987). In 1999, he reteamed with A Soldier's Story star Denzel Washington to make The Hurricane, considered by many critics to be one of his finest achievements.
