Born in Omaha, Neb., on Feb. 8, 1941, Nick Nolte worked his way up from regional theatre in California to uncredited work in B movies, finally making a name for himself in the miniseries "Rich Man, Poor Man." This "man's man" role earned him larger parts in the 1970s and '80s in such films as The Deep (1977), North Dallas Forty (1979) and the comedy 48 Hrs. (1982), with then-newcomer Eddie Murphy.Nolte moved on from his trademark gruff-but-lovable roles to a variety of characters in Q & A (1990), Cape Fear (1991) and The Prince of Tides (1991), for which he earned his first Best Actor Oscar nomination. He earned his second for Affliction in 1999.
While continuing to play the strong leading man in films such as The Good Thief (2002) and Northfork (2003), Nolte still contributes solid supporting work in bigger films, such as Hulk (2003).
