Although born in Shoreham, England (Sept. 28, 1968), Naomi Watts was raised in Australia, where she made her screen debut in 1989's Flirting, alongside Thandie Newton and longtime friend Nicole Kidman. After relocating to Hollywood, Watts' first film appearances made little impact (except for her turn as Lori Petty's pal in the minor cult item Tank Girl). It was a breakthrough, dual-role performance in director David Lynch's strange-even-for-him surreal mystery Mulholland Drive (2001) that earned Watts numerous acting awards and landed her on the "A" list.
2003's multilayered drama 21 Grams drew an even more compelling acting job from the blond beauty, and she was rewarded with her first Academy Award nomination, as Best Actress in a Leading Role.
