The most famous puppet troupe of TV and film was the invention of writer, actor and director (and voice of Kermit the Frog) Jim Henson (1936-90). In 1954, he created the gang that would grow to include Rowlf the Dog, Kermit, Miss Piggy, Elmo, Oscar and Fozzie Bear. The Muppets made their network TV debut on "The Jimmy Dean Show" in 1963 and six years later began their run on "Sesame Street," which continues to this day. The syndicated "Muppet Show" ran from 1976 to 1981, and the troupe even did a stint on the first season of "Saturday Night Live."
The Muppets conquered the big screen with 1979's The Muppet Movie, followed by The Great Muppet Caper, The Muppets Take Manhattan, The Muppet Christmas Carol and Muppets from Space. In addition, the Henson Creature Shop puppets were seen in The Dark Crystal, Labyrinth (both of which Henson directed), Little Shop of Horrors and many others.
