Michael C. Hall (the "C" stands for Carlisle) was born Feb. 1, 1971, in Raleigh, N.C., and polished his acting chops on Shakespeare, appearing in off-Broadway productions of "Cymbeline," "Macbeth," "Timon of Athens" and "Henry V."But getting cast in the 1998 revival of "Cabaret" led to even better things when the production's director, Sam Mendes, recommended Hall to Alan Ball, who had written the screenplay for Mendes's American Beauty and was looking for someone to play David Fisher, the closeted gay son of a mortician, on his new series, "Six Feet Under" (2001-05). The emotionally complex role brought Hall an Emmy nomination as well as two Screen Actors Guild awards for Best Ensemble Cast.
In 2006, Hall returned to television with "Dexter," starring as a forensics expert who likes to kill people in his spare time, earning two Golden Globe nods and a third Emmy nomination.
