The daughter of first-generation Italian-Americans, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio was born in Lombard, Ill., on November 17, 1958. She originally trained for a career as an opera singer, studying voice at the University of Illinois.After college, Mastrantonio moved to New York, appearing in the 1981 revival of "West Side Story," and she received critical acclaim for her portrayal of Viola in a New York Shakespeare Festival staging of "Twelfth Night." Known for playing intelligent, strong-willed women, she made her feature film debut as Al Pacino's feisty sister in Scarface (1983).
In 1985, Mastrantonio starred with Paul Newman and Tom Cruise in The Color of Money, earning an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress. Other notable films include The Abyss, Class Action, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, Limbo, My Life So Far and The Perfect Storm.
