Better known to critics than to the public during the early part of her career, Mary-Louise Parker finally achieved widespread recognition with Emmy-nominated roles on "The West Wing" (2001-06) and the Showtime series "Weeds."Born Aug. 2, 1964, in Fort Jackson, S.C., Parker studied acting at the North Carolina School of the Arts before heading to New York City to practice her craft. 1990 was an important year for the actress, who made her Broadway debut (in "Prelude to a Kiss") and her first major film appearance (in the AIDS drama Longtime Companion).
Since then, Parker has split her time between stage and screen, winning a Tony Award for her work in "Proof" (2001) and an Emmy for the miniseries "Angels in America" (2003). She has also received acclaim for her performances in Fried Green Tomatoes (1991), Grand Canyon (1991), Bullets Over Broadway (1994) and The Robber Bride (2007).
