Considered by many to be the greatest living American film director, Martin Scorsese was born in Queens, N.Y., on Nov. 17, 1942. After briefly considering a life in the priesthood, he enrolled instead at New York University's film school. Thanks to several impressive short films, Scorsese worked briefly for producer Roger Corman, directing Boxcar Bertha (1972). His reputation for capturing the gritty heart of New York life grew with Mean Streets (1973), starring two actors long associated with Scorsese -- Robert De Niro and Harvey Keitel. The three worked together again in the landmark film Taxi Driver (1976).
Scorsese soon tackled the biography of prizefighter Jake LaMotta in Raging Bull (1980), which earned him the first of several Oscar nominations for directing and writing. His critical success continued with films such as Goodfellas, Casino, Gangs of New York, The Aviator and The Departed, for which he finally earned Oscar honors for Best Director.
