Born November 22, 1967, in Kenosha, Wis., Mark Ruffalo moved to California when he turned 18, working in theatre and eventually founding the Orpheus Theatre Company.Despite being cast in small and B-movie television roles for years, Ruffalo found his breakthrough role in Kenneth Lonergan's You Can Count on Me (2000). This was followed by higher-profile work in The Last Castle (2001), with Robert Redford, and Windtalkers (2002).
After being diagnosed with a brain tumor, Ruffalo underwent surgery, recovered and returned to work in a series of films that displayed his range as an actor, including somber works such as My Life Without Me (2003) and We Don't Live Here Anymore (2004), comedies such as View from the Top (2003) and 13 Going on 30 (2004), thrillers such as Collateral (2004) and oddball roles such as his part in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004).
