Detroit native Lily Tomlin entered the world Sept. 1, 1939, and from childhood she began creating the offbeat characters that would later become her hallmark. She caught the showbiz bug while in college and dropped out to take up performing in coffeehouses and nightclubs.Tomlin's career kicked into high gear in 1970 when she joined the kooky cast of the TV comedy series "Laugh-In," where her daffy characters Ernestine the telephone operator and 5-year-old Edith Ann kept viewers in stitches. Surprisingly, Tomlin made her film debut in a dramatic role in Nashville (1975), for which she snagged an Oscar nomination. Her subsequent movies include 9 to 5 (1980), All of Me (1984), Shadows and Fog (1992) and The Beverly Hillbillies (1993).
Tomlin returned to television in 1996 as a regular on the sitcom "Murphy Brown" and took on a recurring role in "The West Wing" beginning in 2002.
