Born Feb. 5, 1964, in New York City, Laura Linney is the daughter of playwright Romulus Linney. A Brown University and Juilliard graduate, Linney made the jump from theater to the big screen with a small role in Lorenzo's Oil (1992). In 1993, she began playing the eventual recurring character Mary Ann Singleton in a TV adaptation of Armistead Maupin's "Tales of the City."Her popularity grew thanks to strong supporting performances in Primal Fear, Absolute Power and The Truman Show. But it was her role in You Can Count on Me (2000) that earned her a Best Actress Oscar nomination and her turn in the TV movie Wild Iris that garnered her first Emmy win.
Taking time out in 2002 to act in the stage play "The Crucible" (for which she won a Tony), Linney returned to the screen with a powerful performance in Mystic River and an Oscar-nominated supporting role in Kinsey (2004). Another Oscar nod came with her role in The Savages, and Emmy and Golden Globe wins came with her role as Abigail Adams in the miniseries John Adams.
