Born Dec. 10, 1960, in Belfast, Northern Ireland, Kenneth Branagh joined the Royal Shakespeare Company at age 23. He soon formed a rival troupe, the Renaissance Theatre Company, still in operation.Branagh's film debut was A Month in the Country (1987), but it was his directing and starring in Henry V that earned the 29-year-old Oscar nominations in both categories. Branagh teamed with then-wife Emma Thompson in Henry V, Dead Again, Much Ado About Nothing and Peter's Friends.
He directed and starred in Mary Shelley's Frankenstein and continued his pursuit of making wide-appeal Shakespeare films with his ambitious filming of the entire text of Hamlet. That earned Branagh his third Oscar nomination (for Adapted Screenplay). He also nabbed an acting Emmy for the TV movie Conspiracy, was nominated for a few more (Shackleton, Warm Springs, Wallander), and played the buffoon in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002).
