The daughter of a British tea planter, Julie Christie was born April 14, 1941, in Chukua, India. After studying at the Central School of Speech Training in London, Christie made her stage debut in 1957 and three years later was cast in the British TV serial "A for Andromeda."In 1963, Christie made her first big film splash opposite Tom Courtenay in Billy Liar. Two years later, she shook filmgoers with her sexually liberated performance in Darling, which earned her an Oscar. The following years brought starring roles in Doctor Zhivago, Far from the Madding Crowd and three films with Warren Beatty: McCabe & Mrs. Miller, Shampoo and Heaven Can Wait (1978).
With her appearance in Kenneth Branagh's Hamlet and an Oscar-nominated turn in Afterglow, Christie experienced a career resurgence in the mid-'90s. In 2004, she appeared in Finding Neverland and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.
