Born June 8, 1966, in Spring Valley, N.Y., Julianna Margulies spent half of her childhood in Europe and the other half in the United States before enrolling at Sarah Lawrence College, where she took her first turn on the stage.Margulies's feature film debut in Steven Seagal's Out for Justice (1991) led to regular work in television with the gritty dramas "Law & Order" and "Homicide: Life on the Streets." But it was her Emmy Award-winning turn as likable head nurse Carol Hathaway on the hit hospital drama "ER" (1994-2000) that made the actress a star, pairing her romantically with small-screen heartthrob and eventual Hollywood A-lister George Clooney.
During and after "ER," Margulies clicked off a string of intriguing film roles, including a Hasidic wife in A Price Above Rubies (1998), a lesbian in What's Cooking? (2000) and the sorceress Morgaine in TNT's "The Mists of Avalon" (2001).
