Celebrated as much for her captivating smile as for her acting prowess, Julia Roberts was born in Smyrna, Ga., on Oct. 28, 1967. She left home for New York City after graduating from high school and quickly landed work as a model. The acting bug bit her soon after, and she eventually nabbed her first movie roles in 1988's Satisfaction and Mystic Pizza. Her portrayal of a diabetic in Steel Magnolias brought her an Academy Award nomination (for Best Supporting Actress), but it took 11 years for her to win the Oscar (for Best Actress) for her portrayal of crusader Erin Brockovich.
Although she's starred in dramas, Roberts is perennially remembered for her dazzling turn as a prostitute who discovers love (and shopping) in Pretty Woman, kick-starting a long string of romantic comedies, including My Best Friend's Wedding, Runaway Bride, America's Sweethearts and Notting Hill.
