Musical shorts led to Garland's feature debut in Pigskin Parade (1936). But it was as Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz (1939) that she became a pop-culture legend and earned a special Oscar for Outstanding Juvenile Performer of the Year. That same year, Babes in Arms teamed her for the second of nine performances with Mickey Rooney.
Before her screen career faded in the late 1950s, Garland shone in Easter Parade, For Me and My Gal, Meet Me in St. Louis, The Harvey Girls, The Clock and The Pirate. A Star Is Born (1954) and Judgment at Nuremberg (1961) earned her additional Oscar nominations. She later turned to television and concerts. Garland died in London on June 22, 1969.
