Born in Kingsland, Ark., on Feb. 26, 1932, Johnny Cash grew up picking cotton with his siblings and learning hymns from his mother, a folksy heritage that influenced his music and helped his appeal with working-class fans.Though he is best known for his recording career -- and by his iconic moniker as "the Man in Black" -- Cash also enjoyed success as an actor, making his film debut in Door-to-Door Maniac (1961) and launching his own small-screen variety shows with "The Johnny Cash Show" (1969) and "Johnny Cash and Friends" (1976).
Other career highlights include A Gunfight (1971), in which he starred opposite Kirk Douglas; the made-for-television movie The Gospel Road: A Story of Jesus (1973), which he co-wrote, produced and starred in; and "The Simpsons" (1997), in which he voiced the role of an animated coyote. He died Sept. 12, 2003.
