Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on February 28, 1957, John Turturro attended Yale Drama School before pursuing roles onstage and character parts in films. In 1987, he received an Independent Spirit Award nomination for his intense portrayal of a psychopath in Five Corners.A regular in the films of director Spike Lee and writer-director brothers Ethan and Joel Coen, Turturro is known for playing nervous eccentrics and rage-filled maniacs -- but often plays more tender characters as well. In 1992, he directed, co-wrote and starred in Mac, winning the Camera d'Or at Cannes. Notable films include Do the Right Thing, Barton Fink (for which he won Best Actor at Cannes), Quiz Show, Unstrung Heroes, Box of Moonlight and O Brother, Where Art Thou?
In 2004, Turturro won an Emmy for a rare television appearance on "Monk." He continues to work on the stage, as well as in independent and Hollywood films.
