Born in Chicago on Aug. 3, 1950, John Landis began his career as a mail boy at 20th Century Fox before making his debut as a writer-director with the horror homage Schlock (1973).But while die-hard Michael Jackson fans may remember Landis as the director of videos for the wildly popular "Thriller" and the somewhat controversial "Black or White," he is best known as the creator of films that were hugely popular with audiences but less well-received by critics, including Kentucky Fried Movie (1977), National Lampoon's Animal House (1978), The Blues Brothers (1980), An American Werewolf in London (1981), Spies Like Us (1985), Three Amigos (1986) and Coming to America (1988).
The 1980s marked the pinnacle of Landis's cinematic successes, but he reteamed with Eddie Murphy and Dan Aykroyd in the 1990s for Beverly Hills Cop III (1994) and Blues Brothers 2000 (1998), respectively.
