A popular TV and film comic whose career ended just as it was peaking, John Candy was born Oct. 31, 1950, in the Toronto suburb of East York, Canada. He honed his considerable comic skills with Toronto's Second City comedy troupe, and by the late '70s was appearing in Canadian films (such as The Silent Partner, 1978) and on the sketch comedy series "SCTV."Later, he would appear on-screen with his SCTV co-stars and with members of the "Saturday Night Live" gang in the films 1941, The Blues Brothers, Stripes, The Great Outdoors, Little Shop of Horrors and many more. He surprised many with an effective dramatic cameo in JFK (1991) and had starring roles in Summer Rental, Uncle Buck, Cool Runnings and Planes, Trains and Automobiles.
Candy died March 4, 1994, in Mexico while filming Wagons East; his last completed film, Canadian Bacon, was released posthumously.
