Born Sept. 19, 1948, in Cowes, England, Jeremy Irons took up acting when he failed to get into veterinary school. The veterinary field's loss was the theater's gain, and after studying at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, he began appearing regularly on the London stage.Irons made his film debut in 1980's Nijinsky and received widespread praise for his role in the miniseries "Brideshead Revisited." This led to dramatic leads in a string of films, including The French Lieutenant's Woman and Betrayal.
Two high points of Irons's career would come in the late '80s with his portrayal of identical-twin gynecologists in David Cronenberg's Dead Ringers and murder suspect Claus Von Bulow in Reversal of Fortune (which earned him an Oscar). Later films include Lolita (1997) and Being Julia (2004). His role as the Earl of Leicester in the miniseries Elizabeth I reaped him the 2006 Emmy award.
