McTeer -- who trained at London's Royal Academy of Dramatic Art -- was already well-known in England when she received a 1997 Tony Award (among other honors) for her performance in Henrik Ibsen's "A Doll's House" on Broadway. Still, she remained a relative stranger to American audiences even after nabbing a Golden Globe and an Oscar nod for the indie drama Tumbleweeds a few years later.
In 2009, the actress racked up a Drama Desk Award and a Tony nod for her portrayal of Mary, Queen of Scots, in "Mary Stuart." Later in the year, she received an Emmy nomination for her role as Winston Churchill's wife, Clemmie, in the HBO production Into the Storm.
