A graduate of the prestigious Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, James McAvoy was born in Glasgow, Scotland, on April 21, 1979. In the wake of his parents' divorce, he was largely raised by his maternal grandparents.Landing a spot in the Sci Fi Channel miniseries Children of Dune proved to be the young actor's big break. But his film career took off in earnest when he was cast as Mr. Tumnus, the Faun, in the big-budget epic The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.
Since then, McAvoy has emerged as one of the hottest actors of his generation. He earned critical praise for his roles in The Last King of Scotland and Atonement, picking up BAFTA and Golden Globe nominations. He also starred as Jane Austen's would-be suitor in the costume drama Becoming Jane and ventured into the action genre opposite Angelina Jolie in Wanted.
