James Franco
James FrancoJames Franco's high school classmates voted him the student with the best smile, yet it was the young man's brooding qualities that first caught the attention of audiences.

Born April 19, 1978, in Palo Alto, Calif., Franco attended UCLA for a year before dropping out to study acting with Robert Carnegie. In 1999, he made his big-screen debut in Never Been Kissed and gained heartthrob status with his portrayal of rebellious Daniel Desario in the series "Freaks and Geeks." His Golden Globe-winning performance in the TV biopic James Dean (2001) sealed his place in the public consciousness.

In 2002, Franco hit the jackpot playing Peter Parker's friend-turned-foe in Spider-Man -- success that has enabled him to alternate between big-budget Hollywood projects and more serious endeavors, including Robert Altman's The Company (2003), Paul Haggis's In the Valley of Elah (2007) and Gus Van Sant's Milk (2008), as well as not-so-serious fare (Pineapple Express, for which he won a Golden Globe).
