Jake Gyllenhaal
Jake GyllenhaalThe son of director Stephen Gyllenhaal and writer-producer Naomi Foner, Jake Gyllenhaal was born in Los Angeles on Dec. 19, 1980. Having already acted during his childhood in City Slickers (1991) and A Dangerous Woman (1993) -- a film directed by his father -- he dropped out of Columbia University after just two years.

Gyllenhaal began getting noticed as an actor with his first lead role in October Sky (1999) and, shortly thereafter, starring opposite his sister, Maggie, in the cult hit Donnie Darko (2001) -- for which he received an Independent Spirit Award nomination. He then conquered more dramatic roles in movies such as The Good Girl (2002), Moonlight Mile (2002) and the film adaptation of David Auburn's award-winning play, Proof (2004).

Gyllenhaal's first big-budget action role was 2004's weather-catastrophe film The Day After Tomorrow, directed by Roland Emmerich.
