Actor Jack Palance comes by his tough-guy persona naturally: Born Feb. 18, 1919, in Lattimer Mines, Pa., the son of a coal miner, Palance worked in the mines himself as well as boxed professionally and piloted a bomber in World War II before he turned to acting.Palance worked on the New York stage in the late 1940s, and in 1950, he made his film debut playing the villain in Elia Kazan's Panic in the Streets. Palance went on to play sinister characters in a long string of TV shows and films, earning Oscar nominations for his work in Sudden Fear and Shane. In 1957, he won an Emmy for his portrayal of Mountain McClintock in Rod Serling's "Requiem for a Heavyweight."
Over the years, Palance has also appeared in foreign films, including Jean-Luc Godard's Contempt (1963), and on TV shows such as "Bronk." In 1992, Palance finally received his Oscar, for his supporting role in City Slickers. He died in 2006 of natural causes.
