What do you do when you create a screen persona so iconic that his leather jacket ends up in the Smithsonian? If you're Henry Winkler -- and that character is "the Fonz" from television's "Happy Days" -- you retreat behind the camera.Born Oct. 30, 1945, in New York City, Winkler began acting in eighth grade and never stopped. After attending Boston's Emerson College, Winkler received his master's degree in fine arts from the Yale School of Drama in 1970. Four years later, he landed a role in The Lords of Flatbush, playing a character that served as a precursor to the Fonz.
When "Happy Days" ended its run, Winkler began devoting more time to directing and producing, helming a number of TV movies and series during the 1980s and '90s. As the new millennium dawned, Winkler again turned to acting, appearing in films such as Holes (2003) and on TV shows such as "Arrested Development."
